How do you grow orchids?

Hi im having really bad luck with orchids. Up to date i believe i have owned at least 5 and everyone of them has died and i cant figure out why. Ive looked all over the Internet and got overwhelming results that i cant understand at all. I am just a novice at orchids and all i want is just a small and basic awnser. I finally gave up after all this time and now i want to try again and start fresh. If any would like to awnser the questions like; watering, pesticides, light, fertilizer, etc. that would be much appreciated.

P.S. Also everytime i got an orchide, a white residue that looked like dried up was covered on the leaves. If anyone has an awnser for that also, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First you need to start by selecting a species that is easy to grow. Phalaenopsis tends to be the easiest and most readily available so I will give you some instructions for their care. You want to buy one from a respectable grower, so walmart, home depot, target and florists are out of the question. Most of the plants you get from them are already diseased so it is best not to take your chances. If there is no one in your area then order online. http://www.santabarbaraorchidestate.com/masterlist.php?genusname=Phalaenopsis this is a good, reliable source for healthy plants.

Phals like eastern exposure and routine watering. Most people underwater orchids but that is truly hard to do because their bark medium dries out very quickly especially the arid home environment. The way you water is important too. Take the plant to the sink and fill it with water to the rim of the pot and allow it to soak for 20 minutes once a week in the summer and less in the winter as it gets cooler. You can add a 20-10-20 urea free orchid fertilizer to the water. Do not mist Phals! this usually causes molds or crown rot which could have been the demise of your first plants. Instead of misting place a dish filled with pebbles and water under the plant to provide humidity.
