there are thousands of different types of orchids, and they have very different growing requirements. Some need winter chill to set flowers, others need tropical heat and humidity.
Some grow in soil, others grow on trees with roots exposed to air. If you live in a warm climate, read about Phalaenopsis, vanda, cattleya, dendrobium. If a cooler climate, read about paphiopedilum, cymbidium, odontoglossum.
No orchid like to be over watered or have the pot sitting in wate as it rots the roots.
