Orchidaceae is the largest family of the flowering plants (Angiospermae).Its name is derived from the genus Orchis. The Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew list 880 genera and nearly 22000 accepted species, but the exact number is unknown (perhaps as many as 25000) because of taxonomic disputes. The number of orchid species equals about four times the number of mammal species, or more than twice the number of bird species. It also encompasses about 611% of all seed plants. About 800 new orchid species are added each year. The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2000 species), Epidendrum (1500 species), Dendrobium (1400 species) and Pleurothallis (1000 species). The family also includes the Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), Orchis (type genus) and many commonly cultivated plants like some Phalaenopsis or Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species in the 19th century, horticulturists have more than 100000 hybrids and cultivars. Orchidaceae are cosmopolitan, occurring in almost every habitat apart from deserts and glaciers. The great majority are to be found in the tropics, mostly Asia, South America and Central America. They are found above the Arctic Circle, in southern Patagonia and even on Macquarie Island, close to Antarctica. Escape to a tropical paradise at The Orchid Show: Brazilian Modern, featuring beautiful displays of thousands of orchids throughout the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. In its 7th year, brilliantly colored orchids and the lush tropical setting of a contemporary Brazilian garden await visitors. Miami-based landscape architect Raymond Jungles has created this contemporary Brazilian garden design, inspired by his mentor, Roberto Burle Marx , an icon of Brazilian design. The design features fountains, pools, and colorful mosaics combined with graceful palms, delicate orchids, bromeliads, and other native plants of Brazil. The orchids have been selected by the Manager of the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections at the Botanical Garden and Curator of The Orchid Show, Marc Hachadourian and are featured throughout the Haupt Conservatory. Beyond beauty, the show offers the chance to learn about orchids: the most diverse species of flower on earth, orchid preservation at The Garden, and ongoing research and conservation efforts by Botanical Garden scientists in Brazil. In addition, there are many educational activities including Chocolate and Vanilla Adventures in the Everett Childrens Adventure Garden, Home Gardening Demonstrations, and other exciting programming.

This is the famous choi praya river in bangkok,it runs for many hundreds of miles and has hundreds of small outlets,one such outlet runs to one of the many orchid farms,and if you are lucky enough to visit thailand,you should make a point to see one of these farms,the variaties on sale are amazing.and the prices are unbelievable,you wont pay more than a few dollars for the rarest of plants.
